Session 3

Can technology integration in American classrooms adequately or correctly be expressed as a hierarchy? Why or why not?

It is possible for technology integration in American classrooms to expressed as a hierarchy. In the classrooms of today, there is definitely some type of integration taking place. The hierarchy would be on the five levels mentioned by Dr. Newberry, from adjunct to transformational. I think the variance would come into play as to which classrooms use the lower end of the hierarchy versus the higher end. In my 4th period class, the level of usage is the integrated use as a student. The only reason that this class is at this level is because it is being used as a prototype for a web-based mathematics course. On the average, the level of usage would be as a teacher tool. The problem that arises in more integration is the position of providing standards based instruction and having the time to instruct and allow time for development via technology. Whenever I am able to allow the students time for discovery using the computer, I run into the problem of having access to the lab.

Hi Anita,

Using a 4th grade class as a prototype for a web based math course is a great idea. That says a lot about the willingness of the school to integrate technology as a teaching tool. It must be exciting to be part of it. I can also see the exception that this distinction causes. While on the more average class there is a lack of resources to be used demonstrated by the inability to use the lab when you want to.

Sounds like you'll be pretty busy with 4th period. It's a great idea and I hope it is successful.

I can't wait to see your power point project. This is something the kids always struggle with and it is so frustrating. Looking forward to it...

Hi Anita,

I am looking forward to the presentation on any math project using technology. I am sure yours will be fantastic.

Anita,
Took at a look at your proposals, they look good and looks like you will be busy as most of us will be. :-) You will do great with the PowerPoint as I have spoken with you in previous classes. Looks like you were seeking ideas for the Artifacts for your second project. You may consider providing a sample of the Grading Program you actually use, maybe a link to the site of the manufacturer of the software, maybe posting an outline you use for the actual instruction. Just a few thoughts, hope that helps.
