My experience...
I worked for an adult education school as the Basic Skills teacher. While I was there, I witnessed a lot of bickering and inappropriate talking about the director of the school. I didn't really understand why until hearing Brian's podcast. the teacher that I will call Ms. Z was upset at the way that her classroom supplies were being handed out. While Ms. C kept a tight rein on the supplies and called continuous meetings about the goings on within the school. Ms. Z felt that Ms. C was trying to control everyone by controlling the supplies. Bottom line was that Ms. C knew the direction that she was trying to take the school in, and allowing Ms. Z to have the supplies that she wanted, but not necessarily needed was out of the question.
Ms. Z was interested in the operation of her class and not the success of the school overall, she would have been the management person that Brian pointed out. Ms. C was interested in the vision for the success of the school, which meant that she had to consider the changes that needed to take place to ensure the success of the program. Ms. C was the Leadership person, she had to make decisions for the common good, not just the individual.
The light went on for me after hearing Brian's podcast. I began looking at the management and leadership roles in a new way!!

I'm glad the podcast helped you integrate your experiences within the context of the class. Keep up the good work!
Anita,
Don't you just love those that control such things. I guess what I have ot remember is that there may be a goal, purpose and reason behind such actions that is guiding the persons actions. I personally always appreciate a little background information that helps me accept that behavior a bit more easily.

Hey, I did not know you worked at my school :-)
We had the laser printer from the hallway (see my session 2 post) taken from the hallway last night and placed into a teachers room because of "paper abuse". Funny thing is it was just done and no one was consulted and no one was informed of this move. Guess who's room the printer ended up in? The biggest abusers room!@#!#@#
Hi Anita,
I learned that it is very hard to get along with everyone at work in order to get their support when you need to get something done.
As in Ms. Z case, I think the leader, Ms. C has her own plan and advantage to achieve whatever she tries to reach. It is classic case of confliction of management and leadership.
